Ruoqi Jin, composer

 

Ruoqi (Rocky) Jin composes a variety of music, including energetic, traditional Hollywood-style music for films and games, experimental ambient music, and hip-hop tracks. Most recently, Rocky has collaborated with Mohamed Sultan and Jiapeng Xiang, two graduate film producers at Maryland Institute College of Art. She also worked as an intern for several music production companies, including NetEase Cloud Music and Transcendent Starlight Media & Arts. She is currently working as an assistant for Mpath LLC, mainly focusing on the preparation of metadata and uploading music tracks to Mpath’s international distributors’ portal, owned by Sony/ Universal.

 

Rocky is interested in the connections between culture and music. She did research on Gayageum and Lusheng, two traditional instruments in Korea and Asia. Her focus was on the tradition, origin, education, and preservation of these two traditional instruments. The research was published in 2019 back in China. She incorporates her passion for east Asian culture into her composition as well. She rescored the trailer for Mulan using hybrid Chinese and western instruments. She also explored traditional Japanese music for a project and composed approximately 8 minutes of hybrid Japanese and orchestral music for the Ghost of Tsushima’s gameplay. 

 

Rocky has also been a Beijing Philarmonic Choir member for over ten years. They won the Grand Prize of the City of Arezzo in the International Polyphonic Competition. She worked as an assistant for this choir to help organize the team, from training and performances to daily schedules.

 

Rocky is currently pursuing her B.M. in Music for New Media from the Peabody Institute, where she studies with Thomas Dolby and Chris Kennedy, and her B.A. in Economics from Johns Hopkins. She is the Artistic Director of SLAM, Johns Hopkins University’s premier hip-hop dance group, and also a member of KPM, an award-winning k-pop dance cover group at JHU.
